Your Essential Tool for Making Improvements

What will every Olympic athlete competing in London 2012 be using everyday to improve performance? It is something that you can and should use to help you get the best out of your cycling for 2013…. A Training Diary!

No matter what your cycling objectives, keeping a record of all of your cycling data and your thoughts and experiences, will enhance your cycling.

Being able to look back on your training history can be very valuable. It can inspire you with how far you’ve come, explain a problem you are having (you could be doing too much or not enough) or simply allow you to compare one time period with another.

If you’ve set Event goals, they should be written in the front of your diary. It is crucial to keep reviewing how you’re progressing towards that goal. You need to know you’re on target and the only way of ‘keeping on target’ is to monitor your progress in a training diary!

A training diary is also useful for recording self-testing.  Maybe the test you perform is as informal as going as fast as you can round a set course, or a more formal lab test repeated regularly, or indoor turbo session you do from time to time.

So what should you record? There are two important elements you should write down. The first is your basic data. The minimum you need to record is distance and time but you can also include average speed or heart rate, if you are using a monitor.

The second element is just as important and is a subjective record of your thoughts and how tough the session may have felt. You may also include variables such as weather and terrain. It is a good idea to score your finished ride on any scale that you fancy – be it marks out of 10, A to D or even gold stars.

Keeping a training diary doesn’t have to be an onerous task, and taking 5 minutes at the end of your session is well worth it, when you can look back over the past month or year and clearly see your improvements.

You can use software to keep track of your rides via PC, or smartphone or use a pen and paper in the form of a notepad!  That’s it!  A training diary is so easy to do and keep up, yet such a powerful tool to improving your cycling!  Get started today and you’ll soon be reaping the rewards!
