Tech review – Campagnolo Athena 11 Speed Groupset

Campagnolo Athena 11 speed Groupset

Combining substance and style Campagnolo have once again raised the bar with their new 11 speed Athena groupset. While the Record and Super-Record groupsets are something most of us only dream of owning, Campagnolo have always kept their eye on their ‘lower’ lever options. For the price conscious cyclist out there the new Athena 11 speed has come a long way to bridging the gap, and now offers a very reasonable option either as a complete groupset or as a component up-grade.

The ever-popular ErgoPower levers are seen by many as the most comfortable on the market and are possible the most elegant piece of equipment Campagnolo have produced in recent years. There are two options when selecting your chainset, either the stiffer carbon version or a beautiful high-glossed polished aluminium crank. While carbon is the material of choice when performance is your only desire, the aluminium components would compliment a more style-driven machine.

The front and rear derailleurs are precise and sharp while they shift up and down the cassette. The only slight negative regarding the groupset is its tricky instalation and need of fine-tuning of the gears on a regular basis. If your someone who like to do all your mechanical work at home you’ll need a special tool for fitting the 11 speed chain, which can be a rather unwanted expense, otherwise its a trip to your local bike shop.

While the rear derailleur will need adjustment on a regular basis it still works beautifully well,  and perhaps its no harm having to get up close and personal with your equipment like this. Its only a quick adjustment and your off again. Also with a weight-loss of over 80 grams from the previous version it all adds up to a great deal.
